Research Description
  1. Inflammation plays a pivotal pathological role in many diseases. For example, atherosclerosis is an inflammatory disease of the arterial wall, where both cellular and humoral immunity mechanisms are involved. Promoting cytokines and chemokines releases as well as adhesion molecules expression are responsible of leukocytes recruitment. On the other hand, influenza A virus causes respiratory tract infections, which are occasionally complicated by secondary bacterial infections. Influenza A virus replicates in epithelial cells and leukocytes resulting in the production of chemokines and cytokines, which favor the extravasation of blood mononuclear cells. Above diseases development is inhibited when recruitment of immune cells is repressed. Base on the anti-inflammatory concept, my research works focus on screening and developing of potential agents from natural resources (TCM or herbal medicine) for the treatment of above diseases.
  2. Osteoporosis is caused by dysregulation of bone homeostasis and induced a reduction in skeletal mass due to an imbalance between osteoclast-mediated bone resorption (osteoclastogenesis) and osteoblast-mediated bone formation (osteoblastogenesis). Current drugs used to treat osteoporosis include bone resorption inhibitors, which prevent further bone lose and maintain bone mass by inhibiting the function and differentiation of osteoclasts. Besides, new bone formation is primarily a function of the osteoblast, agents that regulate bone formation act by either increasing the proliferation of osteoblasts or inducing differentiation of the osteoblasts can stimulate new bone formation. Therefore, materials that enhance osteoblastogenesis or inhibit osteoclastogenesis may have the potential to ameliorate or prevent osteoporosis. On the other hand, Osteoarthritis (OA) is closely associated with functional alterations in bone and can result in osteoporosis. It is believed that cytokines and proinflammatory medidtors play an important role in the pathophysiology of OA. Thus, anti-inflammatory agent may be also useful to prevent or treat OA.
